Quantum capacitance and density of states of graphene

چکیده
We report capacitance measurements in top-gated graphene sheets as a function of charge carrier density. A measurement method using an LC-circuit provides high sensitivity to small capacitance changes and hence allows the observation of the quantum part of the capacitance. The extracted density of states has a finite value of 1× 1017m−2 eV−1 in the vicinity of the Dirac point, which is in contrast to the theoretical prediction for ideal graphene. We attribute this discrepancy to fluctuations of the electrostatic potential with a typical amplitude of 100meV in our device. In this study, quantum capacitance of graphene-based electrodes is evaluated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The obtained results showed that quantum capacitance of graphene-based supercapacitors could be significantly improved by existence of structural defects on the graphene sheets at sufficiently high concentrations because of creating impure states resulted from carbon ...
متن کاملTailoring graphene-based electrodes from semiconducting to metallic to increase the energy density in supercapacitors.
The semiconducting character of graphene and some carbon-based electrodes can lead to noticeably lower total capacitances and stored energy densities in electric double layer (EDL)capacitors. This paper discusses the chemical and electronic structure modifications that enhance the available energy bands, density of states and quantum capacitance of graphene substrates near the Fermi level, ther...
متن کاملTheory of carrier density in multigated doped graphene sheets with quantum correction
The quantum capacitance model is applied to obtain an exact solution for the space-resolved carrier density in a multigated doped graphene sheet at zero temperature, with quantum correction arising from the finite electron capacity of the graphene itself taken into account. The exact solution is demonstrated to be equivalent to the self-consistent Poisson-Dirac iteration method by showing an il...
